PANAW 2017

A message from NCAPAN President Susan Knowles, MSN, RN-BC…

Happy PeriAnesthesia Nurse’s Week

Skilled in Nursing, Professionals in Caring

To all my fellow perianesthesia nurses and members of ASPAN and our own NCAPAN, this is your week to be recognized! It starts with a proclamation from Governor Roy Cooper. This has not occurred in a long time, so a big shout out and thank you to Emily Cox, Angie Harris, Jenni Owen, and Adam Combs for making this happen. Adam has the idea and the rest is history.

I love this quote from Mother Teresa, Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.” This means, take care of you first. We are givers and fixers and we look after ourselves last. Between caring for your family, sometimes your aging parents, working, possibly going back to school, and giving back to your community and church, your days are full. I know because I have been there and still am in certain instances.

Being involved in your local districts of NCAPAN, means we can continue to move forward and affect change in our specialty area. One night a month, quarter, or whenever you decide to meet is all it takes. Is it a sacrifice sometimes? Yes. Are there times you would rather be home than at a meeting for 60-90 minutes? Yes. We are professionals and this is what we do. This is the expectation and what a great example it sets for our children. How you may ask? It shows them that being involved and letting your voice be heard helps to determine practice standards and directs the future of nursing.

Thank you for the care and compassion you show to your patients and their families each day. For the knowledge and expertise you put into practice and for always striving to treat patients as you would your family, you are appreciated!

“Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For indeed, that’s all who ever have” Margaret Mead

Please feel free to call or contact me for any questions, ideas, or to say, “I want to get involved”. I look forward to hearing from you.
